Most people assume canyoning in Montenegro means a full-day trip to the far north of the country. It doesn't. Fifteen minutes above Budva — 8 km from the Old Town — the Drenostica stream has carved a canyon of emerald pools, natural water slides and small waterfalls that stays full of water all summer long. It is the closest real adrenaline escape to the busiest tourist town on the coast, and you can be back at the beach by lunchtime. Here is everything we get asked about the tour, answered by the guides who run it every day.
What is Drenostica Canyon like?
Drenostica is a hidden gem right above Budva — a family-friendly canyon equipped with 3 zip-lines, plenty of jumps and natural slides, and pools you rappel and swim through. Unlike many Mediterranean canyons, it does not dry out: there is plenty of water from spring to autumn. You move through the canyon walking, swimming, sliding and abseiling, always secured and always supervised by a guide.
Do I need experience — and can kids join?
No experience is needed. Our licensed ICOpro guides teach you basic abseiling at the start and supervise every rappel and jump. The minimum age is 7 years (around 25 kg); participants should be comfortable in water and in generally good health — the tour is not suitable for people with heart problems or serious knee issues. The difficulty is easy to moderate, which is exactly why Drenostica is the canyon we recommend for first-timers and families.
How long does it take and where do we meet?
You spend 2–3 hours in the canyon. The meeting point is the Terrazza Budva parking lot, a 15-minute drive (8 km) from Budva Old Town — you get the exact GPS location and directions with your booking confirmation. One local tip: navigate directly from Budva town, so your GPS does not send you on a detour.
How much does it cost and what is included?
The tour costs €100 per person, and groups of 4 or more get 10% off. The price includes licensed ICOpro guides, full canyoning gear (wetsuit depending on season, harness, helmet and rappel device), insurance and park taxes — and free GoPro photos and videos of your descent, with a download link emailed the same day, no watermarks. If you want more than GoPro footage, a professional photographer can join your group as an add-on, delivering 50+ edited high-resolution images within 24 hours.
When is the season?
The Drenostica season runs from April to October. Because the stream keeps its flow all summer, even an August heatwave means cool, clear water in the canyon — arguably the best natural air-conditioning in Budva.
What should I bring?
Very little. Wear swimwear under the wetsuit we provide, and bring sturdy sneakers or water shoes plus a change of clothes for afterwards. Everything technical is included.
What if the weather turns bad?
Safety first: if heavy rain raises the water flow above safe limits, the tour is rescheduled or refunded. You can also cancel free of charge up to 48 hours before the start.
